This Saturday at 8pm, John McCain and Barack Obama will share a stage for the first time in a live forum on CNN. At a church. With its pastor as the moderator.

I’m not going to bash religion here, but the first meeting between these two candidates has special significance and I’m skeptical that an Evangelical Christian megachurch is the place for serious political discourse. Granted, I’m not sure that serious political discourse is something that can happen on commercial television today regardless of location and host, but this just doesn’t smell right to me.
another reblogger asked, what is the problem with this? the most glaring point is that we have a (tragically waning) separation of church and state in this country. religion and politics shouldn’t mix. it’s fine (if misguided, in my personal opinion) if people vote along religious lines. you can vote however you want, for whomever you want. but the institution of religion should keep its nose out of politics, and vice versa.
if the government can’t tell you who to worship, why should your priest be allowed to tell you who to vote for? -M
